Beforeigners

Series Beforeigners — 1 season, 1 episode

Description:

Story

A dead woman washes ashore at Tjuvholmen, drawing police officer Lars Haaland into an investigation with an unfamiliar partner. Alfhildr Enginnsdottir comes from the Viking Age, one of the many people from the past who have appeared in the present after mysterious flashes erupted across the oceans. As Lars and Alfhildr begin examining the circumstances surrounding the death, their very different backgrounds shape every step of the inquiry and open the door to questions far beyond a single case.

Overview

Beforeigners combines science fiction, drama, fantasy, and crime storytelling within a near-future Norway transformed by a strange global phenomenon. People from the Stone Age, the Viking era, and the late nineteenth century have arrived in the modern world, creating an unfamiliar society where historical customs and contemporary institutions exist side by side. The episode introduces the partnership at the heart of the series, pairing a weary police officer with a Viking newcomer while keeping the investigation grounded in the unsettling mystery of the arrivals. Its atmosphere balances procedural tension with a broader sense of social and temporal dislocation.

Directed by Jens Lien, the Norwegian series uses the waterfront crime scene to establish its central questions: who belongs in this altered present, how can people from radically different eras work together, and what forces may stand behind the phenomenon that brought them here?

Cast and Characters

  • Nicolai Cleve Broch as Lars Haaland, a burned-out police officer assigned to investigate the death at Tjuvholmen.
  • Krista Kosonen as Alfhildr Enginnsdottir, Lars's new partner and a woman from the Viking Age navigating the modern world.

The episode’s central dynamic grows from the contrast between Lars’s experience within the present-day police system and Alfhildr’s origins in a distant historical era. Their developing cooperation gives the investigation its human focus while reflecting the wider collision of past and present.
