Overview
The Mentalist is an American detective crime drama built around Patrick Jane, a former celebrity psychic medium whose apparent paranormal abilities came from exceptional skill at reading people. After the murder of his wife and child by the elusive serial killer Red John, Jane abandons his former public persona and devotes himself to helping investigators bring criminals to justice.
Working alongside an elite California investigative team, Jane applies observation, deduction and psychological insight to difficult cases. His pursuit of Red John remains a constant personal objective, adding a darker emotional thread to the series' case-based structure. The episode's poisoning investigation brings that method into a particularly personal setting, where professional suspicion and past relationships intersect.
