Movie Poor Things (2024)

Description:

Story

A young woman receives an extraordinary second chance when an unorthodox scientist brings her back to life. Her return opens the door to a world she has yet to understand, filled with unfamiliar rules, powerful appetites and assumptions imposed by the society around her. Seeking experience beyond the limits of her sheltered existence, she leaves with a debauched lawyer and sets out on a restless journey across continents.

As the adventure carries her through changing surroundings and encounters with people who try to define her, she develops an increasingly independent view of the world. Curiosity becomes a source of strength, while questions of desire, equality and personal freedom guide her choices. The story keeps its central mystery intact while following a woman who refuses to remain confined by the expectations of her time.

Overview

Poor Things blends science fiction, comedy and drama into an eccentric coming-of-age story with a distinctly adventurous scale. Its premise places an unusual experiment beside a journey of self-discovery, allowing the film to explore how identity forms when inherited prejudices lose their authority. The tone moves between provocative humor, romantic entanglement and serious reflection on autonomy.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film brings together British, Irish and American production backgrounds. Its richly imagined setting supports a narrative about liberation without reducing the protagonist's path to a simple quest for approval. Instead, the story follows her growing determination to choose her own direction, even when that choice challenges the people and customs surrounding her.

Cast and Characters

Emma Stone leads the ensemble at the center of the film's transformation-driven story. Willem Dafoe appears alongside her, with Mark Ruffalo contributing to the journey as the lawyer who accompanies the young woman across the continents. Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott round out the principal cast.

The performers bring contrasting energies to a world shaped by scientific experimentation, social convention and the pursuit of freedom. Their characters form the human landscape through which the protagonist tests ideas about attachment, independence and equality, while the ensemble helps balance the film's comic provocations with its dramatic concerns.
