Story

In the vast silence of deep space, a father and his young daughter face the demands of survival aboard a spacecraft far from any familiar world. They are part of a small crew of death-row prisoners who accepted a one-way mission in exchange for their freedom, traveling toward a distant black hole. Cut off from society and living in complete isolation, the father and daughter must preserve their fragile bond while confronting the physical and emotional pressure of their surroundings. Their secluded existence becomes an intimate struggle shaped by dependence, fear and the need to protect one another.

High Life blends science fiction with slow-burning thriller tension and the restrained intensity of a melodrama. The story stays close to its central relationship, using the remote setting to explore loneliness, endurance and the limits of human connection.

Overview

Directed by Claire Denis, the film unfolds as a stark, atmospheric drama set against the emptiness of deep space. Its German, French, British, Polish and American production background reflects a distinctly international creative identity, while the premise of condemned convicts sent on a scientific mission near a black hole gives the narrative room to build unease through isolation rather than spectacle.

The contrast between the vast environment and the private world shared by a parent and child shapes the film's tone. Tension grows from the crew's confinement and past, while the emotional core remains grounded in the question of how a fragile new family can survive when every source of comfort and support has disappeared.

Cast and Characters

Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche lead the cast alongside André Benjamin, Mia Goth and Agata Buzek. The ensemble brings to life the ship's crew of former convicts, with the story centered on a father and daughter whose relationship carries the emotional weight of the narrative.
