Story
In a conservative English town, Edith Swan and her neighbors begin receiving anonymous letters packed with outrageous profanity. Their shock quickly turns into public scandal, and suspicion falls on Rose Gooding, Edith's outspoken Irish migrant neighbor. A trial follows, drawing national attention and exposing tensions that reach far beyond the letters themselves.
As the case gathers momentum, Police Officer Gladys Moss starts to question the official version of events. With the town's women joining her investigation, small details begin to challenge the accusations against Rose. The search for the writer balances sharp comedy with a closer look at prejudice, social pressure, and the power of a community determined to uncover the truth.
Overview
Wicked Little Letters blends comedy and drama through a lively mystery set against the tightly controlled rhythms of provincial life. Its outrageous language creates the film's immediate comic spark, while the investigation reveals the rivalries, assumptions, and buried frustrations shaping the town.
The story draws its energy from the contrast between Edith's deeply conservative world and Rose's direct, unruly personality. Alongside the central mystery, the film follows women who begin to claim space in a case that has already been shaped by public judgment. The production brings together talent from France, Great Britain, and the United States, with the tone moving between irreverent humor, courtroom tension, and character-driven drama.
Cast and Characters
Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Joanna Scanlan, Gemma Jones, and Malachi Kirby lead the ensemble. The central figures include Edith Swan, whose household becomes tied to the scandal; Rose Gooding, the neighbor accused of sending the letters; and Police Officer Gladys Moss, who takes a closer look at the evidence.

The performances bring distinct personalities to a town where respectability carries considerable weight and a seemingly simple investigation gradually exposes deeper conflicts.
