Movie The Amateur (2025)

Story

When his wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London, a brilliant yet deeply private CIA decoder finds his life shattered by grief and frustration. His supervisors refuse to take action, leaving him with no official path toward justice. Relying on his intelligence and determination, he steps beyond the limits of his role and begins pursuing those he believes are responsible. The investigation draws him into a dangerous world where careful analysis must give way to personal risk, and every decision carries consequences.

Driven by loss, The Amateur follows an unlikely protagonist as he confronts institutions that will not answer his demands. The story keeps its focus on the tension between a methodical mind and a violent mission, creating an action thriller shaped by suspense, isolation, and the pressure of acting alone.

Overview

Directed by James Hawes, this American action thriller centers on a CIA codebreaker forced to transform his professional abilities into the tools of a private pursuit. The contrast between his reserved nature and the hazards surrounding him gives the film its central tension. Moments of calculated observation sit alongside the urgency of a man who can no longer accept inaction from those around him.

The film explores grief, responsibility, and the cost of crossing boundaries in search of justice. Its London setting and intelligence-world premise provide a tense backdrop for a story about personal resolve, institutional limits, and the unpredictable consequences of taking control of a mission alone.

Cast and Characters

Rami Malek leads the cast as the introverted CIA decoder at the heart of the story. His character brings an analytical perspective to a world shaped by danger and retaliation, while the loss of his wife gives the mission its deeply personal stakes.

Holt McCallany, Rachel Brosnahan, and Michael Stuhlbarg also appear in the ensemble alongside Dan Sapani. Their characters surround the protagonist as he confronts professional resistance, emotional upheaval, and the risks of pursuing his own course. Together, the cast supports a thriller built around a solitary central figure and the people connected to his decision to act.
