Story

Mickey Barnes has accepted a job where survival comes with an unusual condition. As an expendable employee on a human expedition to Niflheim, an icy world being prepared for colonization, he can be sent into dangerous situations with the knowledge that a replacement body will be regenerated after each fatal mission. Most of his memories return with every new version, allowing Mickey to continue working while carrying the accumulated strain of repeated death.

When one iteration is lost, the regeneration process produces a result that disrupts the rules of the expedition. Mickey is forced to confront a problem that reaches beyond the hazards of Niflheim and threatens the carefully controlled system built around his expendability. His struggle combines survival, identity, and the uneasy question of how much of a person can be reproduced.
