Dr. T & the Women

Movie Dr. T & the Women (2000)

Description:

Story

Dr. T is a successful Texas gynecologist whose professional life gives him plenty of authority, while his home life grows increasingly difficult to manage. His wife suffers a breakdown, one daughter stages a fake marriage, another becomes absorbed in conspiracy theories, and his secretary carries an unspoken crush. Surrounded by people who need his attention, Dr. T begins longing for time that belongs only to him. His connection with a kind outsider offers a quieter space where he can step away from the demands of family and consider what he wants for himself.

Robert Altman’s drama explores family pressure, emotional dependence, and the fragile balance between caring for others and preserving a private sense of self. The story moves through domestic tension, romantic uncertainty, and moments of dry observation, creating a portrait of a man whose polished professional confidence cannot solve every problem waiting at home.

Overview

Blending melodrama with character-driven drama, Dr. T & the Women places its central figure inside a crowded world of competing needs. Set against the social landscape of Texas, the film follows the strain that develops when a respected doctor becomes the emotional anchor for several women at once. Each relationship reveals a different kind of attachment, from family loyalty and personal crisis to romantic expectation.

The film’s ensemble structure gives its characters room to shape the atmosphere around Dr. T, while the central conflict remains intimate rather than heroic. Its appeal lies in the contrast between public composure and private confusion, along with the carefully observed tensions that surface when familiar family roles begin to shift.

Cast and Characters

Richard Gere leads the cast as the accomplished gynecologist at the center of the story. Helen Hunt, Liv Tyler, Kate Hudson, and Farrah Fawcett join him in an ensemble built around the women connected to his family and professional life.

The characters include Dr. T’s wife, whose breakdown unsettles the household; his daughters, whose very different choices create new complications; and his secretary, whose feelings add another layer of tension. A kind outsider becomes an important presence as Dr. T searches for perspective beyond the demands surrounding him. Directed by Robert Altman, the film uses these interwoven relationships to examine affection, responsibility, and the limits of emotional patience.
