Story
Secretary follows a young woman who, after leaving a mental hospital, takes a position in the office of a demanding lawyer. Her new routine appears orderly from the outside, yet the relationship with her employer gradually develops its own private rules. Authority, obedience and personal desire become closely connected as the two discover an unsettling form of intimacy within the boundaries of their working arrangement.
Blending melodrama, comedy and drama, the film approaches its central relationship with a provocative sense of humor and close attention to emotional detail. The office setting gives the story a controlled, formal atmosphere, while the characters’ increasingly personal exchange brings tension into ordinary professional rituals. Their connection raises questions about consent, trust and the ways people search for acceptance on their own terms.
Overview
Directed by Steven Shainberg, Secretary is an American drama with comic and romantic elements. Its focus remains on two complicated adults whose unconventional bond challenges familiar ideas about workplace conduct and emotional dependence. The story balances discomfort with tenderness, allowing awkward moments and darker impulses to exist alongside vulnerability.
The film’s appeal comes from the contrast between its restrained surroundings and the intensity developing beneath them. A precise office routine becomes the setting for a relationship that refuses easy definitions, while the characters’ guarded behavior gradually reveals their need for recognition and control. The result is an offbeat, character-driven film with a distinctly intimate tone.
Cast and Characters
Maggie Gyllenhaal leads the cast as the young secretary, bringing emotional volatility and guarded vulnerability to the role. James Spader plays the demanding lawyer whose strict manner conceals a deeply personal investment in their connection. Jeremy Davies, Lesley Ann Warren and Stephen McHattie complete the principal cast, adding further dimension to the world around the central pair.
The characters are defined through shifting power, hesitation and mutual discovery. Their relationship drives the film, while the supporting roles help frame the social expectations and personal pressures surrounding it.
