Mikhail Grigorievich Shapiro was born on April 2, 1908 in Yekaterinoslav. He studied at the Leningrad technical school of screen art (1925-1926), at the cinema department of the Leningrad Institute of Art History (1926-1928). He worked as an accompanist of the Leningrad Proletkult Theater. Over the years, he staged performances in the country's opera houses. Since 1928 - director of the film studio "Sovkino" (later "Lenfilm"). In 1941–1942 he was the translator of the political directorate of the Leningrad Front, and in 1942–1945 he was the director of the CSC. In 1948-1953 - senior editor of the storyline film studio "Lenfilm". He died in Leningrad on October 26, 1971. Wife - writer Zhanna Vladimirovna Gauzner.
