PETROV VLADIMIR MIKHAYLOVICH Director, screenwriter, actor. People's Artist of the USSR (1950). He studied at the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University, at the drama department of the drama school at the Alexandrinsky Theater. He graduated from the Odessa school ensigns, served in the army. In 1917 - actor "Forest Winter Theater" in Petrograd. In 1918 he worked in the troupe of the famous theater director Gordon Craig in England, in 1920 he returned to Russia. In 1925 he graduated from the N. Morozov film courses in Leningrad. Since 1943 - director of the film studio "Mosfilm". He made his debut in 1928 with a film for children "Joy and Druzhok", which began a series of children's films. But the real directorial debut of Petrov was the adaptation of the play A.N. Ostrovsky "Thunderstorm". This work pushed him into the front ranks of domestic directors. The film is marked by a masterful work with an actor ensemble of major theater masters: A.K. Tarasova, V.O. Massalitinov, M.I. Zharov, M.M. Tarkhanov, M.I. Tsarev). Predilection for the Russian classics manifested itself in the further work of the director. He is the author of the famous film versions included in the golden fund of national cinema: “Guilty Without Guilt” by Ostrovsky “Auditor” by Gogol, “Duel” by Kuprin, “On the Eve” by Turgenev. The peak of Petrov’s work is the historical two-part film “Peter I”, which was awarded the highest prize of the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937. The director managed to create a whole gallery of historical portraits, to reveal the diversity of human characters. Brilliant acting work: Peter played a powerful and temperamental N.K. Simonov, Menshikov - M.I. Zharov, Catherine - A.K. Tarasov. The intense atmosphere of the epoch of Peter recreated by the director captured the viewer, made him a participant in all the vicissitudes of his fast-paced and eventful life. The battle scenes of the time of Peter the Great were filmed extensively and expressively.
