Story
Hays and West pursue a possible link between the local church and the crimes surrounding the Purcell children. Their investigation follows two lines of inquiry at once: the detectives search for one suspect while bringing another in for questioning. Outside official channels, Woodard becomes the target of a vigilante group, raising the stakes as suspicion spreads through the Ozarks.
The case remains tied to a mystery that stretches across different periods of time. Evidence, interrogation and local pressure begin to pull the investigators toward a deeper and more unsettling picture of what happened.
Overview
The fourth episode of True Detective, Season 3, combines detective drama with a tense, atmospheric investigation set in the rural communities of the Ozarks. The story develops through careful questioning and tentative connections rather than quick answers, while the threat surrounding Woodard adds an immediate sense of danger.
The series is an anthology built around investigations that uncover the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law. This episode reflects that approach through its measured pace, its fractured timeline and its growing pressure around a case that refuses to stay in the past.
Cast and Characters
The episode centers on detectives Hays, played by Mahershala Ali, and West, played by Stephen Dorff, as they examine the Purcell crimes and follow leads connected to the local church. Woodard occupies a separate but increasingly dangerous strand of the story after becoming the focus of a vigilante group.
The ensemble also includes Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer, whose work adds to the personal tension and community suspicion that develop alongside the police inquiry.
