Diagnosis: Dissent

Movie Diagnosis: Dissent (2024)

Description:

Story

Andrii Dovzhenko uncovers a secret buried for years within the Soviet system. Many people accused of anti-Soviet propaganda were sent to special psychiatric hospitals, where the diagnosis of "slow progressive schizophrenia" turned political dissent into a medical sentence. Drawn into the machinery of punitive psychiatry, Andrii encounters a world shaped by coercion, fear, and the systematic abuse of medicine.

His ordeal leads to a choice with consequences for both his conscience and his family. The authorities offer him a way back to his former life in exchange for cooperation with the KGB. At the same time, the stories of dissidents tortured in psychiatric hospitals demand to be brought into the open. Denis Tarasov's historical drama follows one man caught between personal safety and the responsibility to expose a brutal attack on free thought.

Overview

Diagnosis: Dissent is a Ukrainian drama rooted in the history of Soviet punitive psychiatry. The film draws on memoirs from dissidents who experienced the violence of a totalitarian system firsthand, using Andrii's journey to explore the price of truth under political repression.

The story combines an intimate moral conflict with a broader examination of state power. Its tense atmosphere grows from the collision between official diagnoses, hidden testimony, and the methods used to silence opposition. History remains closely connected to the protagonist's personal dilemma, giving the film a focused human perspective on institutional cruelty and resistance.

Cast and Characters

Konstantin Temlyak leads the cast as Andrii Dovzhenko, a man forced to weigh his return to family life against the need to reveal the suffering concealed inside psychiatric institutions. Irma Vitovskaya, Ostap Stupka, Vitaly Saliy, and Andrey Mostrenko appear alongside him in the film's ensemble.

Directed by Denis Tarasov, the movie places its characters within a society where medical authority has been turned into an instrument of political control. Their choices reflect the pressure placed on anyone who challenges an oppressive system, while the remembered experiences of Soviet dissidents give the drama its historical foundation.
