In 1976 she graduated from the correspondence department of the theater faculty of LGITMiK (workshop of L. Gitelman). She worked as an assistant director, the second director on the Lenfilm film studio. In 1981 she received a diploma from the director's department of VKSR (workshop of Yuri Karasik). She worked as a director on the Lenfilm film studio. Lives in Moscow. In the cinema, Svetlana Proskurina made her debut as early as 1982 with the short film “Parent's Day”, and in 1987 she made her first big game “Playground”. A breakthrough in the director's fate happened in 1989, when her second play tape “The Casual Waltz” won the main competition at the Locarno IFF, bringing the first cinema “Golden Leopard” to Russian cinema. Critics noted in the film some influence of the teacher Svetlana - film director Ilya Averbakh (the same interest in broken female characters) and destinies and at the same time emphasized Proskurina’s different attitude to dramaturgy, her “courageous and tough author's self-will”. In this picture, Svetlana Proskurina decided to break with the plot form, focusing on the visual and sound side of the work. The narrative laws of screenwriting were subjected to an even more radical rethinking and the following work by Proskurina, Reflection in the Mirror (1992), in which she tried to recreate the world of the hero on the screen psychologically. The film participated in the prestigious program “Two-week directors” in Cannes, and put an end to the first stage of the director’s creative biography. Over the next 10 years, she did not make a single feature film and devoted herself to documentary cinema, filming tapes on other artists for the Kultura channel on “Culture” channel - Ernst Neizvestny, Mikhail Shemyakin, Mikhail Pugovkin, Alexander Sokurov. In 2001, Svetlana Proskurina returned to a big fiction movie and began preparing for the shooting of the film “Remote Access” with private producers. Alas, the project stopped at the initial stage, but later, thanks to director Alexander Sokurov and producer Yury Obukhov, in 2004 the picture was nevertheless completed.
