One Night at McCool's

Movie One Night at McCool's (2001)

Description:

Story

A chance encounter at a neighborhood bar draws bartender Randy into the orbit of Jewel, a magnetic young woman whose arrival quickly turns a quiet evening into a criminal nightmare. After a confrontation with Jewel's dangerous boyfriend ends in violence, Randy finds himself pressured into taking responsibility for the death. His cousin Carl and the detective investigating the case soon become fascinated by Jewel as well, making the situation increasingly difficult to control.

Jewel knows how powerfully she affects the men around her, and she is prepared to use their devotion to secure what she wants. As attraction clouds judgment and loyalty begins to fracture, the three men are pulled into a chain of schemes, misplaced trust and escalating danger. Randy eventually looks for a way to break free, even if that means turning to a professional killer. The result is a darkly comic crime story built around desire, manipulation and the trouble that follows when infatuation overwhelms common sense.

Overview

One Night at McCool's combines crime and comedy in a fast-moving tale of seduction, deception and unintended consequences. Set against the nightlife of an American town, the film shifts between barroom banter, criminal complications and the increasingly desperate efforts of ordinary men to regain control of their lives.

The story gains its energy from contrasting viewpoints. Randy is caught between fear and fascination, Carl responds to Jewel with his own hopes and fantasies, while the detective approaches the case with professional purpose that becomes entangled with personal interest. Their competing reactions give the film a playful, cynical tone and keep the mystery tied to character rather than procedure. The atmosphere remains sharp and mischievous as every new promise creates another problem.
