Me Before You

Movie Me Before You (2016)

Description:

Story

Louisa Clark is a young woman from a small town, moving from one temporary job to another while trying to help support her family. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she is hired to care for Will Traynor, a wealthy and accomplished man whose future was transformed by a serious accident. Confined to a wheelchair and deeply withdrawn, Will has little faith in the life ahead of him. Their first meetings are tense, shaped by different backgrounds, opposing temperaments, and the difficult circumstances that have brought them together.

Over time, Louisa refuses to accept the walls Will has built around himself. She begins planning outings and shared experiences, hoping to remind him of the world beyond his home. As their relationship develops, both are challenged to reconsider their assumptions, their desires, and the meaning they attach to independence. Their growing connection brings warmth and tenderness, while also placing them before choices that carry lasting emotional consequences.

Overview

Me Before You is a romantic drama with the emotional pull of a classic melodrama. Set against the contrast between a modest provincial life and a world of privilege, the film follows two people whose paths would probably never have crossed under ordinary circumstances. Their time together creates room for humor, disagreement, affection, and difficult conversations about dignity, responsibility, and the right to shape one’s own future.

Directed by Thea Sharrock, the film is a British-American production built around the gradual change in its central relationship. Louisa’s lively determination brings movement into Will’s carefully guarded routine, while Will’s experience expands her understanding of ambition and personal choice. The story balances intimate domestic scenes with shared outings, allowing the romance to grow through small moments rather than sudden declarations.

Cast and Characters

Emilia Clarke leads the cast as the spirited young woman whose persistence and compassion become central to the story. Sam Claflin plays the successful man adapting to life after his accident, bringing restraint and vulnerability to a character struggling with dependence and lost possibilities.

Janet McTeer, Charles Dance, and Brendan Coyle add depth to the family and social world surrounding the pair. Together, the ensemble gives the drama a broad emotional range, from everyday friction and guarded conversations to moments of genuine closeness. The film’s focus remains firmly on the evolving bond between its two central characters and the effect they have on one another.
