Tens of millions of bison once roamed the American plains; by the end of the 19th century, there were barely 300 left. Their resurgence is one of the greatest victories achieved by conservationists. Grizzly bear populations in North America have fallen and are isolated from each other, but pathways have been opened to connect the grizzlies on the border between the United States and Canada. Reindeer are seriously endangered in southern Canada; however, the fate of one of their herds is improving thanks to an exemplary conservation plan initiated by Indigenous peoples. Wolves roam the Canadian Northwest in significant numbers; in this northern extremity of the Rockies, humans and wolves are learning to coexist and are building a common future today.
