Yo no soy esa

Movie Yo no soy esa (2024)

Description:

Story

Susana opens her eyes after two decades in a coma and finds herself stranded between two very different eras. Inside the body of an adult woman, she still feels like a teenager from the 1990s, carrying memories and expectations shaped by a world that has vanished. Everyday life now follows unfamiliar rules, and nothing around her looks quite the way she remembers it.

As Susana tries to understand the present, she must rebuild her sense of identity and find a place within relationships she can no longer recognize in the same way. Her adjustment brings moments of confusion, tenderness and comic friction, while the melodrama explores the emotional cost of lost time and the possibility of beginning again.

Overview

Yo no soy esa is a Spanish-American comedy and melodrama directed by María Ripoll. The film places a deeply personal coming-of-age story in an unusual setting: a heroine who is still a teenager at heart must grow up all over again in a future she never experienced. The contrast between her 1990s outlook and contemporary life creates room for humor, while the central premise gives the story a reflective edge.

The film considers how identity develops through memory, change and human connection. Susana’s journey brings together generational tension, the awkwardness of social reintegration and the search for familiar ground in a transformed world. It balances the warmth of a character-driven comedy with the more poignant questions raised by a life interrupted.

Cast and Characters

Verónica Etxegui leads the cast as Susana, a woman forced to rediscover ordinary life after an extraordinary absence. Adam Jezierski, Ángela Molina, Silma López and Daniel Grao join her in the ensemble, bringing additional perspectives to the relationships and encounters that shape Susana’s return.

The film keeps its focus on Susana’s emotional and social adjustment, allowing the surrounding characters to reflect the distance between the world she remembers and the one awaiting her. María Ripoll’s direction supports the blend of comic observation and melodramatic feeling at the center of the story.
