Born July 28, 1923 in the city of Urazov (Valuysky district, Voronezh province) .Soviet film director, screenwriter, actor. In 1947 he entered the directing department (workshop of S.I. Yutkevich and M.I. Romm). Member of the CPSU (b) since 1948. Since 1952 - director of the Mosfilm film studio. In 1952, at the end of VGIK, as an assistant director, he participated in the filming of the film "Przhevalsky" (the director of the film was his teacher Sergei Yutkevich). The first directorial work was a film adaptation of the performance of the Theater Studio of the film actor Nahlebnik (1953, together with Mstislav Korchagin). As a film actor he made his debut in his film School of Courage (1954). He starred in more than 80 films. Vladimir Basov is a brilliant character and comedic actor. One of the best directorial work of Vladimir Basov was the film "Shield and Sword" (1968). In a number of his films, he appears as the author or co-author of scripts. His work is diverse in themes and genres - from historical and revolutionary films to adventure films. Among the best adaptations of works of Soviet literature: "School of Courage" by A.P. Gaidar, "The Battle of the Road" based on the novel of the same name by G.E. Nikolaeva, "Silence" according to the story of Yu.V. Bondareva, "Shield and Sword" based on the novel of the same name by V.M. Kozhevnikova, "Days of the Turbins" by M.A. Bulgakov. The film adaptation of John Priestley's play Dangerous Turn, in which the director managed to convey the dramatic nerve of the material, stands apart.
