Story
Ivy and Theo appear to have built the kind of life others might envy. Their marriage is loving, their children bring stability, and both have found professional success. Beneath that polished image, however, pressures are gathering. Theo’s career begins to lose momentum just as Ivy’s ambitions gain force, shifting the balance between them and exposing resentments that have long remained unspoken.
What starts as a private struggle over work, recognition, and wounded pride gradually strains every part of their relationship. As affection competes with rivalry, the couple must confront the expectations attached to success and the fragile boundaries between partnership, independence, and control. The story preserves the tension of a domestic drama while allowing room for sharp comedy and uncomfortable observations about ambition.
Overview
The Roses combines melodrama, comedy, and drama in a relationship-centered story set between professional competition and family life. Its central conflict grows from a reversal of fortune: one partner faces a career decline while the other moves toward greater achievement. That change unsettles the couple’s carefully maintained image and brings private dissatisfaction into the open.
Directed by Jay Roach, the film draws its energy from the contrast between outward composure and inward friction. The British and American production places familiar domestic concerns at the center of the narrative, exploring how love can be tested when success becomes unevenly shared. The tone moves between emotional intensity, biting humor, and the pressure of a marriage struggling to preserve its sense of balance.
Cast and Characters
Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman lead the cast as Theo and Ivy, the accomplished couple whose relationship comes under increasing strain. Their performances anchor the film’s emotional conflict, tracing the movement from mutual support toward rivalry and suspicion.
Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Allison Janney join the ensemble, adding further presence to a story shaped by family expectations, social appearances, and professional ambition. Together, the cast supports a character-driven drama in which intimate tensions carry consequences far beyond the couple’s public image.
