Story
Two young men consumed by conspiracy theories abduct the powerful chief executive of a major company. They believe she is an extraterrestrial visitor preparing to destroy Earth, and their desperate plan places a high-profile figure in the hands of captors whose convictions have taken them far beyond ordinary suspicion. As the confrontation unfolds, the line between imagined threat and possible danger becomes increasingly difficult to read.
Bugonia draws its tension from an extreme clash of perspectives. The men approach their hostage with absolute certainty, while the executive must navigate an ordeal shaped by paranoia, fear, and an elaborate belief about the fate of the planet. The story keeps its central mystery alive through a dark science-fiction premise with crime elements, leaving room for unease, absurdity, and sharp questions about power, truth, and collective obsession.
Overview
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia is a science-fiction crime film produced across Greece, Ireland, South Korea, and the United States. Its compact central setup brings together an ordinary act of criminal violence and a cosmic theory that gives the abduction an unsettling scale. The result is a tense, offbeat work built around captivity, suspicion, and the possibility that reality may be more complicated than either side understands.
The film’s atmosphere balances psychological pressure with darkly comic strangeness. Rather than offering a conventional investigation, it places its characters inside a volatile encounter where personal conviction has enormous consequences. The unusual premise provides a framework for examining how fear can reshape perception and how easily a private theory can become a dangerous mission.
Cast and Characters
Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis lead the cast as the conspiracy-obsessed young men whose belief in an alien threat drives the abduction. Alicia Silverstone appears as the high-powered company CEO at the center of their plan. Stavros Halkias and J. Carmen Galindez Barrera also join the ensemble.
The character dynamics are built around a stark imbalance of power: two determined captors hold a prominent executive, yet their confidence rests on a theory that challenges the world around them. Their opposing positions create the film’s main source of tension, while the ensemble supports a story shaped by secrecy, mistrust, and escalating uncertainty.
