Movie The President's Cake (2025)

Story

In 1990s Iraq, nine-year-old Lamia lives among the historic marshes with her spirited grandmother, Bibi. At school, students are chosen to provide items for compulsory celebrations marking President Saddam Hussein’s birthday. Bibi has taught Lamia a collection of clever tricks designed to keep her away from the kitchen, yet those plans collapse when Musa, an authoritative teacher, selects her for the most demanding assignment: baking the official birthday cake.

What begins as a child’s attempt to avoid an unwanted task quickly takes on serious consequences. Refusal could bring imprisonment or even death, leaving Lamia caught between the protective world she shares with Bibi and the pressure imposed by the school and the state. Hasan Hadi’s drama follows her through a tense, intimate story shaped by family loyalty, fear and the resourcefulness of a child living under political control.

Overview

The President's Cake presents a sharply focused portrait of childhood in 1990s Iraq. Its setting among the marshes gives the film a strong sense of place, while the school’s birthday preparations reveal how public ritual can reach into the smallest corners of everyday life. The contrast between Bibi’s spirited guidance and Musa’s authority creates the film’s central tension, giving Lamia’s predicament both personal warmth and political weight.

Grounded in drama, the film keeps its perspective close to Lamia as an ordinary school assignment becomes a dangerous responsibility. The story explores obedience, courage and the quiet ways people try to retain control when powerful institutions dictate their choices.
