Movie Kneecap (2024)

Story

In Belfast, a chance meeting connects teacher JJ with Naoise and Liam Og, two outspoken young men whose unruly energy finds its natural outlet in hip hop. Their songs, performed in Irish, turn everyday experience into a bold artistic statement and place the language of their community at the centre of a growing cultural movement. As the trio develops an act unlike anything around them, they face the pressures that come with drawing attention to their music, their identity and the cause it represents.

Kneecap combines comedy, drama and music in a story about friendship, creative rebellion and the determination to keep a native language heard. The humour has a sharp edge, and the film moves to a lively, irreverent rhythm rooted in Belfast and its local culture.

Overview

Directed by Rich Peppiatt, this Irish musical comedy-drama follows the rise of a hip hop act built around the Irish language. The film brings together a teacher and two self-styled outsiders, tracing how an unexpected collaboration grows into something larger than a collection of songs. Its focus remains on the energy of performance, the force of language and the tensions surrounding a movement that refuses to stay quiet.

The story balances brash humour with a more personal look at cultural expression. Music drives the narrative forward, giving the characters a way to challenge expectations while strengthening their connection to one another and to the community they represent.

Cast and Characters

Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí form the core of the cast, appearing as the trio at the centre of the Irish-language hip hop act. Simone Kirby and Michael Fassbender also feature in the ensemble.

The central dynamic rests on JJ, the Belfast teacher drawn into the orbit of Naoise and Liam Og. Their relationship supplies the film's comic friction and emotional momentum as they shape an unconventional musical partnership.
