Movie The Friend (2025)

Story

New York writer Iris has built a comfortable life around solitude, routine, and the private world of her work. That balance is disrupted when her closest friend and mentor leaves her a Great Dane named Apollo. The imposing dog quickly creates a series of practical crises, from damaged furniture to the threat of eviction, while also pressing against boundaries Iris has carefully maintained.

As daily life with Apollo grows more complicated, an unexpected bond begins to take shape. Caring for the dog draws Iris into an emotional reckoning with her past and brings buried questions about friendship, loss, and creativity to the surface. The story follows her gradual movement toward a more open understanding of both her inner life and the relationship she shared with the person who entrusted Apollo to her.

Overview

The Friend is an American drama directed by Scott McGehee. Set against the atmosphere of New York City, the film brings intimate character study together with the uneasy, often comic realities of living alongside a very large and demanding animal. Apollo's presence turns familiar rooms and routines into sources of pressure, giving Iris's personal struggles a tangible dimension.

The film explores grief, companionship, artistic identity, and the ways an unexpected responsibility can unsettle a carefully controlled existence. Its focus remains close to Iris as she navigates practical upheaval and a deeper process of self-discovery. The result is a reflective story about the ties people inherit, the memories they carry, and the possibility of finding connection in circumstances they never chose.

The ensemble features Bill Murray, Ann Dowd, Constance Wu, Sarah Pidgeon, and Carla Gugino. Their performances support a character-driven drama centered on Iris, her late friend and mentor, and Apollo, the Great Dane whose arrival reshapes her home and her emotional landscape.
