Movie Problemista (2024)

Story

Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, arrives in New York City with a head full of unusual ideas and the determination to turn them into real creations. His plans face a hard deadline as his work visa approaches expiration, leaving him with little room for mistakes. A possible solution appears through a job assisting an erratic figure from the art world, an outsider whose demands and unpredictable nature could make the opportunity as difficult as the problems Alejandro hopes to solve.

As Alejandro works to protect his place in the country, he must also keep hold of his creative ambitions. The story follows his struggle to balance practical survival with the desire to build a future around his own imagination, bringing workplace tension, artistic eccentricity, and immigrant uncertainty into a sharply comic setting.

Overview

Problemista is a 2024 comedy set against the pressures of New York City and the precarious reality of an expiring work visa. Its central conflict grows from the distance between Alejandro’s inventive approach to toy design and the demanding circumstances surrounding his employment. The film draws its energy from an unusual professional arrangement, where a chance to remain in the United States depends on assisting someone whose behavior is difficult to predict.

The setting gives the story a distinctive urban atmosphere, while the premise keeps the focus on ambition, bureaucracy, work, and the compromises that can accompany a creative dream. Alejandro’s unusual ideas provide the film with a playful edge, and his increasingly urgent circumstances give the comedy a grounded human dimension.
