Movie The Holdovers (2023)
Story
During the Christmas break at a New England prep school, a disgruntled instructor is left on campus to supervise a small group of students who have nowhere else to go. Among them is a highly intelligent troublemaker carrying deep emotional wounds. The uneasy arrangement gradually draws the teacher and student into an unexpected connection, while the school’s head cook faces her own grief after losing a son in Vietnam. Set against the quiet isolation of an almost empty campus, the story follows three very different people as they navigate loneliness, anger, and the guarded beginnings of trust.
Overview
Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers combines comedy and drama in a character-driven story about people brought together by difficult circumstances. The film uses the enclosed world of an elite New England school to explore class, loss, discipline, and the complicated ways people offer one another support. Its atmosphere moves between dry humor and subdued melancholy, allowing the characters’ conflicts to develop through conversation, routine, and reluctant companionship. The Christmas setting adds warmth to an otherwise isolated environment, while the school’s traditions and strict hierarchy sharpen the differences between those who belong there and those who feel left behind. The result is an intimate ensemble drama centered on an unlikely relationship that develops with patience and emotional restraint.
Cast and Characters
Paul Giamatti leads the cast as the curmudgeonly instructor whose enforced holiday duty places him in close contact with students and staff. Da'Vine Joy Randolph portrays the school’s head cook, a grieving mother whose personal loss gives the story one of its most poignant emotional threads. The student at the center of the campus arrangement, a brainy and damaged troublemaker, becomes a tense and often revealing counterpart to the instructor. Carrie Preston, Naheem Garcia, and Andrew Garman also appear in the ensemble. Together, the performers shape a portrait of isolated people whose guarded interactions slowly reveal vulnerability and shared need.
