Story
Stephen Seary, a stage designer building a career in Europe, returns to Australia for what should be a brief visit to his dying mother. The homecoming draws him into unresolved family tensions and conflicts that have remained beneath the surface. As old emotions resurface, Stephen must face the personal history he left behind while trying to protect the future waiting for him overseas.
His plans become further complicated by romantic entanglements, making departure increasingly difficult. With an opera career in Europe at stake, Stephen finds himself caught between duty, memory and the possibility of beginning again. The story explores the pressure of returning to a family in crisis and the difficult choices that follow when the past demands attention.
Overview
The Travellers is an Australian drama directed by Bruce Beresford. The film combines intimate family conflict with romantic tension, following a creative professional whose carefully arranged life is unsettled by an unexpected return home. Its focus rests on strained relationships, personal responsibility and the emotional cost of leaving unresolved matters behind.
The setting connects two very different directions in Stephen's life: the Australia of his family and the European opera world that awaits his return. This contrast gives the film a reflective atmosphere, where professional ambition meets private obligation. Rather than offering simple solutions, the narrative follows the pressure created when love, loyalty and long-held resentments occupy the same space.
