Story
In rural Western Massachusetts, eleven-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 in the close company of her mother, Janet. Home becomes a place of intense observation and private discovery, where Lacy follows every gesture, silence, and change in mood with the curiosity of a child trying to understand the adult world.
Three visitors enter their lives over the course of the season. Each is drawn to Janet’s magnetic presence, while Lacy watches the shifting bonds around her and absorbs their influence. Her vivid imagination gives shape to an inner world filled with extraordinary detail, gradually bringing the boundaries between memory, fantasy, and everyday life into delicate focus.
Overview
Annie Baker’s Janet Planet is a quiet drama about childhood, attachment, and the complicated intimacy between a mother and daughter. Set against the rural landscape of Massachusetts, the film finds emotional tension in ordinary encounters and fleeting changes within a family’s small, self-contained world.
The story unfolds through Lacy’s attentive perspective, capturing the intensity with which children experience a single summer and the people who occupy it. The arrival of new companions opens different possibilities around Janet, while Lacy’s solitary imagination continues to shape how she sees home, love, and independence. The result is an atmospheric coming-of-age portrait with a contemplative pace and finely observed relationships.
